The Right Fit?
- If you have ever tutored a friend or a nephew or a brother or sister, and experienced the profound satisfaction of helping them to understand a new idea or concept
- If you enjoy working with children and, like us, believe that education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world
- If you believe you have what it takes to lead a classroom and are ready to work hard, learn and grow with a group of like-minded people
... then the Numeric Teaching Academy is the place for you!
Our mission at the Academy is to recruit talented young people into the teaching profession, and to provide them with the training they need to become world-class maths teachers. While our focus is on maths, that does not mean you have to be a maths genius to apply. Some of the best maths teachers are people who struggled with maths in school - in some ways they have a clearer understanding of the hurdles faced by learners in their class. That said, geniuses are welcome too!
While you don't need to be a maths whizz to apply, it is important that you are interested in and enthusiastic about the subject. More importantly, it is essential that you are interested in and enthusiastic about working with kids, and that you are passionate about teaching them and helping them to meet their full potential.
The Academy places a special emphasis on working with kids in lower income areas. During your studies at the Academy, you will complete a part-time, yearlong teaching internship in one of our afterschool programs located in Khayelitsha, Mfuleni or Mitchells Plain. As a great man once said: "Education is the great engine of personal development. It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that the son of a mineworker can become the head of the mine, that a child of farmworkers can become the president of a great nation." Being a Teaching Fellow at the Academy is not only about obtaining a teaching qualification, but also about giving back. Through these afterschool programs, you are given the opportunity to change the lives of children even as you train to become fully-qualified teachers.
